The annual Investing in Infrastructure conference is a forum for debate about the leadership driving strategy at a national level and the UK's capability to improve its infrastructure. Delegates this year considered the latest thinking on the links between sectors, the cumulative impact on customers and how planning can better facilitate delivery.

We are assured that the capital is available, the demand is there and that there are plenty of projects with huge potential. The key question facing us is, does the UK have what it takes to deliver resilient infrastructure to keep the UK competitive?

Pamela Taylor, Chief Executive, Water UK, addressed the lack of progress and laid down a challenge for those in the room - that UK plc is now in the driving seat and it is time to get moving.

"This requires partnership with initiative and drive from us, the industry, to ensure policymakers are listening. Their doors are open, we can be sure of that. What we need is to ensure we get to all of them and deliver consistent messages."
Pamela Taylor, Water UK

The audience represented a broad mix of sectors and it was interesting to note that aside from a generally optimistic view, the key themes which emerged included the clear need for better communication between sectors and with government, and stronger leadership for streamlined decision-making.
